Looking back at 2018

13th January, 2018 – Picnic Day

It was a real pleasure to venture on a day-out with our students and their families. This way we come to know each other better and feel the closeness. Parents took a great initiative and helped us to organise this event this year.  We had to hire two buses to accommodate our enthusiastic members. Students enjoyed this out of routine day very much. Outdoor games and socialization is very much needed for all children and we are happy we could provide such an opportunity to our kids.

This section makes various items starting from handmade cards, bookmarks, beaded necklace and earrings to different spices for cooking. On 25th January 2018 we got an opportunity to exhibit our products in a fair in Ramakrishna Mission Ashram in Belur math. The whole day long program was a great exposure for our students. Their art-work got appreciated, which was so encouraging for the children. A step forward towards empowerment of our Specially-abled students!

Sabaro Majhare’ [Pervading All] was the title of our cultural presentation, through which we tried to convey the message that this world is for all. The theme of the evening was ‘Inclusion based on Universal love’ to focus on the beauty of inclusion. We included mainstream children along with our special children, and together they presented a wonderful evening. We were very fortunate to have a galaxy of star artists with us who volunteered to join hands to promote the CAUSE. Here we have Sri Abir Chatterjee on stage with our kids.

1st October Theatre Workshop

It is all about expression.

Tanisha, Siddharta and many more at Udbhaas are eager to express themselves, but unfortunately dont know how…. either they dont have the words or are unable to reach you…
or maybe we are missing what they want to express?
On 1st of October, USHNEEK, the renowned Kolkata based theatre group came and joined hands with Udbhaas to gift these children with the wonderful art of expression through an enchanting Theatre Workshop for the kids. After all, theatre is all about expression!
It was the magic touch by the artists Subhajit and Saheli, with their finger puppets, their ball game their mimes and above all, their smiles, with which they warmed up these kids and got them actively and happily involved. They were coming out of their shells!
Thank you Ushneek. We eagerly look forward to your next session.

October 2018 – Classes for parents

Parent training programs are often organised at UDBHAAS. This October we introduced the concept of dance and movement therapy among our mothers. Students are getting regular exposure to such therapy at school and are getting benefited.

3rd December, 2018 – International Day of Persons with Disabilities

A day to promote the rights and well-being of persons with disabilities. Every seed has the right to germinate and grow into a beautiful plant, every bud has the right to bloom. Some may not grow or bloom to the fullest, but nurtured with care and love, with air and water, they all will flourish to the best of their ability.
To celebrate this day, the happy little children at Udbhaas, alongwith their teachers, spent a blissful morning planting saplings, watering plants and decorating pots. Their glowing faces and nimble fingers at work touched the hearts of all around. Truly, the spirit of love, perseverance and sincerity can overcome all disability.

December 2018 -Christmas Celebrations

The year ended with the Christmas celebrations. One of our students came dressed as Santa and the whole day we had lots of fun and joy together. We made finger puppets, danced  and played.

Thus, alongside regular clinics, therapy sessions and classroom teaching, a lot had been happening all through the year to keep us all busy and amused!

Team Udbhaas has been working with an under privileged community in rural Purulia, training front-line workers on ECD and Early Intervention.
Recently ‘Mothers meetings’ and focused group discussions were organized. The interest and enthusiasm from the mothers was phenomenal. They listened, they learnt and they shared. We are hopeful, through these empowered mothers, state of Early Childhood Development will enhance and the cognitive abilities and social skills of the little ones will eventually improve.

Convergent Project on Early Childhood Development

UDBHAAS Child Development Unit  is working on an unique project on Early Childhood Development in rural India, in the district of Purulia. This project has been taken up in December 2018, in collaboration with UNICEF.

Early Childhood Development (ECD) is a major focus area in child health and well-being today, all across the globe. The extensive short and long-term impact of ECD is being realized by all stake-holders. Both WHO and UNICEF have taken up the issue as a major agenda. In this context, our project is of prime importance.

Our objectives are

  1. To generate awareness about ECD, including assessment, early stimulation and parenting skills to promote child development among front-line workers
  2. To reach out to rural families through home-based delivery by the trained FLWs
  3. To increase parental awareness about ECD, early stimulation and good parenting skills
  4. To promote use of indigenous, affordable DIY educational play material
  5. To augment parental empowerment to promote ECD

The strategy adopted:

  1. Generation of training module and teaching-learning material.
  2. Training for field level health workers (FLWs)
    • Trainees: Total approximately 550 including ASHA, ANM, AWWs. 50-55 /batch; 10 batches

      • early intervention for promotion of proper child development
      • parenting skills.
      • Guidelines for DIY educational play material
  1. Implementation of Home-based health care delivery including ECD for children 0-3 years. Our aim is to reach 1500 families.
  2. Monitoring of Home-based service delivery by FLWs
  3. FGD and short awareness programs to be conducted for mother groups by our trainers and FLWs.
  4. Impact of these activities on parental awareness to be assessed through base-line and end-line survey.

EXPECTED RESULTS & INDICATORS:

  1. Awareness generation among parents about Early Childhood Development and its aberration
  2. Awareness about importance of Early Stimulation in all children
  3. Awareness about red flag signs for developmental delays in children
  4. Earlier detection of developmental delays
  5. Overall enhancement of developmental trajectory in children may be noted in the long run
  6. Better parenting skills, better home environment and less domestic violence
  7. Attendance at ICDS centres will go up
  8. ICDS drop-outs will come down
  9. Detection rate of developmental delay will go up

WHAT WE HAVE DONE SO FAR

  1. Base line survey conducted in 500 households with children aged 0-3 years
  2. Training program and module prepared
  3. Training imparted to 153 FLWs till date

OUR OBSERVATION SO FAR
